What makes them special? Their youthful performance of all traditional music combined with their charitable purpose. On stage, Basket Landing performs an international diversity of folk, bluegrass, and spirituals -- Appalachian, Irish, British, and Canadian. Basket Landing's youthful group has five members: Joan Stein -- the group's leader (lead vocalist, guitar, age 31), Nate Zaur --the group's lead instrumentalist (tenor vocals, guitar, banjo, string bass, and piano, age 26), and three teenagers (Kevin Anderson, bass guitar, percussion, age 15, John Powers, mandolin, backup vocals, age 17; and Amy Powers, banjo, backup vocals, age 18).
All the members of Basket Landing met at a small addiction recovery facility in the Catskills -- four are children of recovered addicts and one is a recovered drug addict. Basket Landing, operating as a nonprofit project, demonstrates the effectiveness of both the addiction recovery and addiction prevention program that brought the group together. The group is involved in three forms of outreach: a) nationwide and regional performances, b) weekly outreach through a free concert every Saturday evening at the meeting and retreat center, and c) special recovery meetings.
