Celestine Hitiura Vaite
Little Brown ($12.95)
Vaite takes us to Tahiti and makes sure that by the end of the novel, you've booked tickets to go visit and see the world she so aptly describes in person. We are introduced to, and fall in love with, Materna Mahi who is a "professional cleaner" in the midst of spat with her lover, Pito. Finding out that she is pregnant and with the reader eventually understanding that "this is Tahiti" she reconciles and takes us on a journey through the rest of her utterly wonderful life.
Vaite, a newcomer to the United States, is brilliant in her ability to bring the reader into a Tahitian state of mind. She tells an irresistable story of a mother-daughter relationship as well as the simple story of life in Tahiti. The reader enters Materena's world and laughs and cries with her family as it grows up from two lovers to husband and wife with three children.
You can almost feel a Tahitian sea breeze through Vaite's sultry, languid prose.
