Sebastian Junger
(W. W. Norton; $23.95)
Many will remember Junger from his first book The Perfect Storm that rocketed Linda Greenlaw to fame and gave weather forecasters a black-eye. For many reasons, A Death in Belmont leapt off the shelf as a "must read." My husband grew up in Belmont, MA and I spent the first 15-years of my adult life as a resident of the Boston suburbs so I was definitely curious just by the title. This time, Junger writes about the Boston Strangler which for chilling and very coincidental reasons is a personal and very close-to-home subject for him and his family. The accused Boston Strangler, Albert DeSalvo, worked in the Junger home on an addition to their house and was working at the Junger house on the day that Belmont resident Bessie Goldberg was found strangled to death by her husband. Need I say more? Junger takes us on a spine-chilling trip back to Boston, Massachusetts 1963 when the city was gripped by fear and the police were stymied in their hunt for the deadly serial killer known as The Boston Strangler.
